Built Alco Schenectady
736, 737, 740, 741 & 742 to AT&SF in 1943
738 & 739 to AT&SF in 1944.
All to VGN in Dec., 1947

Interesting, the first of these built by Alco in 1919 for USRA were painted &
assigned to Virginian as #900 - #904, which VGN rejected in favor the larger
Class AE, 2-10-10-2. N&W gladly accepted them, named Class Y-3 & renumbered
#2000 - #2004. (pg. 65)
Virginian eventually ordered 35 2-8-8-2's between 1919 & 1923 from Alco's
Richmond Works.

N&W 2042 to ATSF 1797 10-43 - Scrapped at Albuquerque, NM. on ATSF, 8-30-47

Since the VGN renumbered them in their original ascending numerical order,
presumably the 2042 would have become VGN 743.

John,
I am now reading the book N&W Railway's Magnificent Mallets, the Y class
2-8-8-2's and on page 13 the author talks about various locos going to SF
and on page 15 it lists the road numbers that went from SF to the Virginian.
2014, 2015, 2021, 2022, 2026, 2029, & 2035 were 3rd hand via the AT&SF.
Hope this answers your question
Thanx

The book notes that ATSF was not fond of the Mallets, but
did like their boilers. ATSF planned to upgrade their
3751 Class 4-8-4's with the boilers from the Y3's, but abandoned
the plan when they found a sale.

John, the standard reference work on articulateds is Robert LeMassena's book
"Articulated Steam Locomotives of North America" They can be found in ggod
condition for about $75 at train shows. Pg 211 says that in 1947 the VGN
purchases AT&SF #'s 1794, 92, 90, 91, 93, 95, 96 (Yep, they are listed in
that order?!), and on the VGN they were 736-742. On pg 213 is a picture of
738, with caption "Those familiar with N&W motive power ... can detect the
origin of GVN ... 732-742, although the lineage was not direct. The N&W had
sold 8 1919-model USRA-standard articualteds to theAT&SF in 1943.. when WWII
was over, 7 were resold to the VGN. More powerful that the VGN's own locos
of the same vintage, these possessed 270-psi steam pressure, and they were
equiped with feedwater heaters... Unfortunately the LaMassena book does
not give CN's. I've hard there was a vol 2 of the book but have never seen
one.

The TLC Publishing reprint (available from the N&W hist Soc store) of the
aug 1955 locomotive diagrams lists the builder's nos, and road nos for each
road. Contact me off list with a fax no or address and I'll be happy to
forward a copy.

[Marty Swartz replies:]
These Alco (Schenectady) locomotives were acquired from ATSF in December
of 1947 and designated class USE by the VGN. Please note, Mr. Moderator
and others, that these should NOT be referred to as (ahem) "VGN Y3's".
(*Shudder*) All were scrapped in June of 1955. Details extracted from page
174 of H. Reid's book "The Virginian Railway" are as follows.

Construction # and date / N&W # / ATSF # / VGN #
61082 April 1919 / 2014 / 1794 / 736
61083 April 1919 / 2015 / 1792 / 737
61089 May 1919 / 2021 / 1790 / 738
61090 June 1919 / 2022 / 1791 / 739
61094 June 1919 / 2026 / 1793 / 740
61097 June 1919 / 2029 / 1795 / 741
61103 June 1919 / 2035 / 1796 / 742

[OK, if N&W called them Y3s and VGN called the USEs,
who knows what the ATSF called them?]
