Walt and others,
The NF&D didn't buy any ALCO's of there own. The pair of RS-36's were ex-A&D which were recieved after the N&W purchased the A&D in 1962. They were rebuilt RS-2's numbers #101 & #102 on the A&D. They came painted for the A&D and stayed that way for awhile. They were later relettered NFD and then repainted in both all blue and all black paint. As for the other ex-A&D ALCO's the #106 was never relettered and off the roster in 1966. The #103 was relettered and later repaint in an all blue paint. The #104, 105 & 107 were just relettered NFD and stayed in A&D paint until they were off the roster in the late 60's. They were replaced with ex-NKP RS-11's from the parent company(N&W). The NFD used the pair of RS-36's and the 4 RS-11's along with some leased units from the N&W(T-6's & GP-9's(ex-wab))until the road was asorbed into the N&W and became the Franklin district.
I hope this helps.

Marty,

Thanks, since the NF&D only bought two more Alco's the rest must have gone for credit on N&W loco's?!

The website for Virginia Short Lines And Industrial Roads has some brief information on the Norfolk, Franklin and Danville Alcos. Most of them were apparently traded back to Alco in the 1960's. Here is the link: http://donsdepot.donrossgroup.net/dr012.htm

I believe Diesel Era also did some articles on the railroad, but I do not know when.
