The information that I have indicates that N&W 306000-306299 were Class B66, and were former Wabash 6000-6299. They were built by Wabash in 1951. It appears approximately 26 of this group were equipped with DF Loaders (probably after the 1964 merger) and these were renumbered from the 3060XX series into 645XXX numbers, but the 645XXX are not consecutive. The group with the DF loaders were reclassified as B66R.

N&W 306300-306599 were N&W Class B67, and were former Wabash 6300-6599, having been built by American Car & Foundry in 1956. Approximately 35 of the 3063XX series were also renumbered into the 645XXX series and reclassified as B67R.

N&W 306600-306899 were N&W Class B68, and were former Wabash 6600-6899, having been built by Wabash in 1957-58 Approximately 28 of the 3066XX series were renumbered into the 645XXX series and reclassified as B68R.

N&W 306900-306999 were N&W Class B68A and were former Wabash 6900-6999, having been built by the Wabash in 1957-58. Approximately 9 of the 3069XX were renumbered into the 645XXX series and reclassified as B68AR.

Another interesting side note. In 1953 the Wabash only had 298 of these cars, numbered 6000 to 6299, so I am guessing that they were probably a relatively new series, probably PS-1 cars. These are the only Wabash boxcars with 8 ft doors in 1953, so I am guessing that they eventually filled out the series through 6999, and then there were still 105 of these cars numbered between (30)6600 and (30)6999 on the NW roster in 1983. Does that sound right? Or does anyone have more details on the history of these cars?

Hi Listers,

First off I want to thank everyone that has responded to my questions about the "doorless" limestone boxcars. Lister Phil Miller sent me a photo of NW 306761 passing in front of the hotel Roanoke in 1987. That fits my modeling period perfectly! Along with the prototype photo came photos of his model of the car...I'm impressed.

I now have a car number to work with. This morning I looked it up in my May 1938 Official Railway Equipment Register. The ORER lists cars numbered in the 306600-306999. All of the 105 listed 40'-6" cars have 8' door openings and an interior height of 10'-5".

The next entry in ORER is for NW 306770 with the same dimensions and 8' door opening and the next line is for NW 306828 with the same info. I don't understand as why the two are called out by themselves.

I'd still like to see more photos of the cars real or model. You can send them direct to me nwrlinemp72 at comcast.net

Take care, John Hecker

P/S: NASCAR is at Martinsville this coming weekend. Even though the tracks have moved, I hope I get to see some trains on the Winston-Salem District!
