Jeff:
I'm not sure what a Data Series book is, but there IS a difference between
Portsmouth and East Portsmouth. The 04/01/72 edition of the Stations
and Sidings list does not show East Portsmouth. It is just east of MP 605.
In the 30's, Portsmouth MAY have had a different MP location than it
currently does because there were significant changes to the alignment
between Valley Street and Spring Lane in the 30's to accommodate the
new passenger station. As for the difference in actual miles and the
mile posts between Norfolk and Portsmouth -- the opening of Pepper
Tunnel (date unknown) eliminated 4.3 miles, the Big Sandy Extension -
Naugatuck to Kenova - eliminated ABOUT 26.4 miles.
Two other factors--
1- The "Norfolk" of 1968 was different from the "Norfolk" of 1910. Mile
Post 0 was located somewhere on Water Street in Norfolk and was
near N&W's passenger station prior to construction of Norfolk Terminal.
By 1968, distance from Norfolk was measured from the freight station
    at Lamberts Point.

2- Maybe the surveyors made a mistake OR maybe there have been
line relocations, but there were 12 consecutive "short" miles between
Farmville and Prospect. The longest of these "short" miles was only
    4,930 feet.
