Train Numbers

Some railroads, SAL for one, showed the names of trains in employee
timetables.
N&W did not. The N&W public timetable showed both name and number. Nos. 9
and
10 were nameless. These trains existed mainly for head-end traffic, but
they rated a
Class J locomotive. Briefly, these trains originated/terminated at Kemper
Street
Station in Lynchburg, but they were always intrastate trains -- barely,
because I
believe N&W ownership ended at State Street in Bristol, the line of
demarcation
between Virgiinia and Tennessee. N&W appeared before Virginia's State
Commerce
Commission for discontinuance of Nos. 9 + 10 citing - - -. lack of
passenger patronage.
