Second main track to be restored in NorthCarolina

May 1, 2007

RALEIGH, N.C. - The North Carolina Department of Transportation's rail division and the Norfolk Southern-operated North Carolina Railroad Company are partnering to invest $20 million to restore nine miles of a second main track between Greensboro and High Point, N.C. Construction is expected to begin later this month.

NCDOT will provide $16 million and NCRR will provide $4 million to restore the track, which was pulled up in the 1970s. Restoring the track will help alleviate delays and improve capacity and passenger train reliability. The route is host to Amtrak's Crescent, Carolinian, and Piedmont.

The project will be completed in three phases, each three miles. Phase I will begin at Scientific Street in Jamestown, N.C., and run to Hoskins Street in High Point. The train control signal system will also be improved. The entire project should take about 18 months to complete.

NCDOT's Rail Division proposed preliminary plans for the project with Norfolk Southern providing the final plans. NS will manage project construction with additional oversight by NCDOT.
