The Heartland Corridor is a project to increase overhead clearances on the former N & W line between Norfolk, VA and the state of Ohio for the operation of double stack container trains into the Mid West. Because of the many tunnels and several bridges that will have to be enlarged, mainly on the Radford and Pocahontas Divisions, there is much interest among some of our members about this project.

The following summary appeared in the April 2007 issue of the railroad industry trade journal, Progressive Railroading for NS projects:

Begin Heartland Corridor project in August. Work includes track lowering or realignment at six tunnels, 4.5 miles of structural modifications to 21 tunnels and open cutting of one tunnel*. Also modify eight through-truss bridges, raise one overhead bridge and modify slide fences at eight locations.

*Big Four No. 2 near Welch according to a USA article.
