N&W Postal Car No. 160

My copy of "The Official Register of Passenger Train Equipment" for March 1967 does not show an active car numbered 160. In the "N&W" section they list Postal Cars with the ranges of 90 to 98 and 162 to 179. The 'Wabash" section shows postal cars with the range of 167 to 179. Did they change the number when it was rebuilt?

Also, Jim could you please tell me what "color guide" you are referencing. I have a copy of the "Norfolk and Western Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Cars" but I didn't see what you were talking about in it.

Right you are, Jim!

I stand corrected.

Ed: Show me an RPO with a star!! They didn't need them. No, this is an active car. The 1967 rebuilding changed a 30' mail apartment into a 60' apartment. It is an ex Wabash car, not Frisco. Jim Nichols

Neither is a star on the car, indicating it's not to be occupied account no toilet facilities. . .

>Further, N&W had sold a RPO to the Florida East Coast Railway at that time, so it's unclear why it sold a car then turned around and bought a similar one.

My understanding is that the cars sold to FEC went circa 1960 - 1961, returning to the N&W 1966, according to the "N&W Color Guide".

Also, it is worth noting that the mailbag hooks are not on the car, so the car likely was being used for either storage mail or package service. Thanks for sharing that shot... I had no idea such a transaction had occurred.
