Virginia Railway Will Be in Operation By Summer

Mr. John Kee, superintendent maintenance of way for the Virginian
Railroad, with headquarters at Norfolk, was in the city yesterday for
a few hours returning from the western part of the state and West
Virginia, where he has been on a tour of inspection. While work in
some branches has considerably diminished on portions of the
Virginian railroad, the road will be completed at an early date and
it is strongly probable that trains will be operated over the entire
system by the middle of the summer.
It is a great system, and when completed will be a strong
competitor of the Norfolk & Western and Chesapeake & Ohio in carrying
coal from the West Virginia coal fields.
It is rumored that a proposition is already on foot for an
arrangement by which the Virginian can use the Norfolk & Western
passenger depot. This report cannot be definitely confirmed but it is
generally admitted that such a proposition is on foot. This indicates
that the Virginian road early contemplates running passenger trains
and before they can complete such a passenger station as they wish to
erect in Roanoke.
