Retrenchment by Va. & S. W.
Bristol, Va., Jan. 2 - Special - The Virginia and Southwestern
railroad is following the example of the Norfolk and Western in point
of retrenchment. Today there was a general cut in the cars shops
here, and a large number of men are idle for the present. The train
crews have been reduced to the extent of seventeen men, and in every
department there will be a reduction to comport with the decline in
tonnage due to the closing of important operations. The wages of the
men at the iron furnace have been reduced and the iron rolling mill
is still idle.
The Virginian and Southwestern railway reduction of force in the
shops today amounted to forty-five per cent of the men. Fifty-seven
men were dropped from the payrolls.
