I'll second "jerry's" comment about adjusting to sleeping alongside moving  
trains.  During my college days, I worked a six month chemical plant job at  
Marcus Hook PA; and lived in a room in Chester PA just 75 feet from the PRR's  
four track NYC to Washington main line.  And it really was the PRR then -  
constant traffic with freight, commuter runs, and the 'name trains 24/7.  I  
rarely woke during at night.  Later; still during my 20's, I 'lived' in a  chemical 
plant for three weeks during a work stoppage.  Worked 6,  slept 6; for 3 
weeks.
People are adaptable.
 
As for the negatives mentioned in connection with camp cars; weather,  odors. 
monotony - I would lose my sense of adventure quickly under those  
conditions.  Interesting thread; I hope the list keeps us up to date.
