Steam Power Ends in Another N&W Railroad District

Last steam engine to make a regular run on the Norfolk and
Western Railway's Shenandoah District is scheduled to chug into the
Roanoke station this morning at 9:10.
Train No. 1 from Hagerstown will be the last steam engine over
the Roanoke to Hagerstown route before the diesels take over.
The N&W's Lynchburg-to-Durham line has been converted more than a
year. Diesels are handling all trains except passengers in the
Cincinnati District.
Diesel units will pull all trains on the Roanoke-to-Winston-Salem
line soon and they are in use on the Clinch Valley line.
Steam engines handle all traffic on the main line from Norfolk to
Columbus, from Radford to Bristol and branches and in the coal fields.
