SCC Grants N&W Authority to Drop Trains 9 and 10

RICHMOND, Jan 24 (AP) - The State Corporation Commission has granted
the Norfolk and Western Railway authority to discontinue passenger
trains 9 and 10, operating between Roanoke and Bristol, effective Feb. 2.
In a companion order this week the SCC granted the Railway Express
Agency authority to handle express by motor truck between the
stations along this route.
In its application to eliminate the service, the railroad cited
insufficient patronage. One train leaves Roanoke about 7 a.m. and
arrives in Bristol about noon. The other leaves Bristol in the early
afternoon and arrives about 6 p.m.
In the 12 months preceding last October, N&W officials said cost
exceeded revenues by $269,000 for trains 9 and 10, the last two N&W
trains to run between Roanoke and Bristol.
When the N&W petitioned the SCC for discontinuance of the trains
Oct. 28, the railway said a survey showed that Train 9 had carried an
average of 3.7 passengers per day between all points in the last nine months.
Train 10 had carried an average of 8.2 passengers in the entire
duration of each daily trip.
Three passenger trains will continue to run to and from Bristol
daily on N&W tracks. They originate with the Southern Railway and are
operated by the N&W through its territory.
