South & Western Railroad

Bristol, Va., Feb. 10. - Special - Good news comes from the east
relative to the completion of the South & Western Railroad, the new
coal carrying line, now being constructed from the Southwest Virginia
coal fields to the seaboard in North Carolina. It is stated that the
company has disposed of its bond in a sufficient quantity to allow an
average of about $20,000 per mile for completing the road. The heavy
tunnel work has never been suspended for a moment since the road was
begun, and the new sale of bonds means that as soon as the winter
breaks, several thousand men will be put to work with the view of
completing the road by the end of the present year.
It is understood that the Southern Railway, which is now working
for a direct connection with the Southwest Virginia coal fields, is
to complete the Holston River road this year. This new line extends
from Moccasin Gap, Va., to Persia, Tenn., where it connects with the
Southern for Asheville and Salisbury and points south.
