Here's a couple of photos of 2156 taken in October 2006. It seems to be in decent shape. The NTM is absolutely worth a visit for anyone who likes trains. St. Louis Union Station is also a good destination. The mostly original waiting room is spectacular, and while there aren't any trains stopping under the train shed anymore there's still some of it preserved as the roof over a mall. It was quite pleasant to sit under the soaring shed on a sunny afternoon, have a beer and a burger, and imagine what was once there.

Has anybody been to see the 2156 mallet in the National Transportation
Museum in St. Louis? I'm curious what kind of condition it is in. I'm
thinking about making a trip out this summer.

Subject: RE: Signal Demise/position lights/Searchlight signal

As to the question about where I saw that searchlight signal, it was in the
NW Western Division, near Pearisburg, Va. I found it just before a bridge
crossing over the New River from the NW side to the old Virginian side of
the river.
Thanks again,
Ken McWilliams

I believe you're referring to the eastbound signals that are at the control
point called Celco... these are visible from the westbound lane of US 460 as
you pass over the former Virginian. These were CPLs, but were replaced in
the late 90s with newer Safetrans (I think) 'stoplight' style signals.
There are very few former Virginian 'searchlight' type signals left, mainly
in the Elmore area. (The ones at Oakvale were taken down recently...)

I look forward to meeting you at the Archives in March.
