An obscure historical question

Can anyone provide what the whistle signal/s were for
"down brakes", i.e. apply brakes, when brakemen rode
the tops of cars and there were no air brakes in let's
say the 1880's or 1890's?

I suspect there may have been differences between some
railroads but do not recall having ever seen it
directly referenced as to how many longs and shorts
and what order they may have been.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Bob Cohen
