The N&W was doubletracked from Norfolk to Portsmouth, Ohio
Double track was in place Portsmouth to Columbus, but it was
on the Columbus District that N&W made one of its first conversions
from double to single track -- from Omega to Lunbeck, about 10
miles.

The primary direction of traffic Burkeville to Pamplin was west on the
main line and east on the Farmville Belt Line (for freights). The Belt
Line was traffic controlled, but the main line was single track, automatic
block signal. With the main line through Farmville removed, it's now
16 miles Abilene to Pamplin with no intermediate siding.
