Norfolk and Western Fined for Running Trains on Sundays
------
Appomattox, Va., March 26 -- The indictments, which were returned by the grand jury to the circuit court some time ago against the Norfolk and Western Railway Company for violating the law prohibiting running trains on Sunday and certified to the circuit court by Justice John T. Lee for trial, were called by the justice yesterday and were all disposed of.
A number of the cases were disposed of at the cost of the commonwealth, and judgment was entered in twenty-two of them against the railway company with a fine of $50 and cost in each of the twenty-two cases. This made the fines against the company aggregate $1,100, and after paying the cost, which was assessed against the commonwealth in the cases that were dismissed, leaves $1,000 clear in fines.
This is the largest amount of fines that a justice has imposed in this county for a long time, and is probably the largest amount ever paid by the Norfolk and Western railway at one time for violating the Sunday law. This disposes of all the cases that were pending in this county against the company.

[Does anyone have any details about this "Blue Law" as it applied to Virginia railroads and when it was repealed?]
