Japanese Visit N&W Facilities

Wheel assemblies and practices on American railroads are being
studied by three officials of the Japanese National Railway (JNR).
They were briefed yesterday on the assemblies used by the Norfolk
and Western Railway by R. M. Stickley Jr., N&W assistant to the
superintendent of motive power. N&W has an outstanding record of long
wear from their assemblies.
Dr. Shigeo Ohwaku, chief, steels and alloys laboratory; Isamu
Kawamoto, deputy chief engineer; and Dr. Nabutaka Yamamoto, technical
adviser, are on a world tour of railroads.
Kawamoto said the JNR is planning a 300-mile standard gauge
railroad from Tokyo to Osaka. This line will be in addition to the
present narrow gauge line now serving these and other Japanese cities.
The three officials are hoping to find solutions to their problems
with wheel assemblies, rails and steel alloys during the tour.
