December was not a prosperous month for operators
bucking the extra board; the regularly assigned
operators stayed on the job to be able to pay Christ-
mas bills. The Jacksonville Terminal offered 21-
straight time days, so I went. The hardest part
of the assignment was learning the nomenclature.
It was not unusual for Sears to forward catalogs
in regular freight service in 40-foot box cars (or
REA express boxes). Here was an entry made
on the 6:00 AM DOPE SHEET issued Dec. 13, 1964.
" Simpson Yard (Southern's Jacksonville Yard) will
deliver RI 23595 Magazines (in reality catalogs) to be
placed on the dray track for unloading." Employees
on the JTCo. referred to these as "cat" cars.
