The Southern did run a special that day from Hagerstown to Front Royal and
then to Alexandria on the 1973 Independence Limited with SRR 4501. My reference
is from the book, "Steam's Camelot," by Jim Wrinn.

Hello, Glenn:
Please see the picture taken of Boyce station on July 8, 1973:

This view was apparently taken from the observation car on a steam special,
judging by the smoke wisps above the track. I initially thought it might have
been a NKP 759 High Iron Company trip from Hagerstown to Shenandoah, but in
checking the 759 was running a trip to Scranton around that weekend. The
Southern Steam Specials didn't venture onto the north end of the Hagerstown
District. So, would you have any thoughts about what trip this may have been?
Best wishes,
Frank Scheer
