This below web site has good biographical information on Major Jed Hotchkiss, CSA. He was initially on General Stonewall Jackson's staff where he served as Jackson's topographer. He provided General Jackson vital support especially during Jackson's brilliant Valley Campaign of 1862.

Gordon

If I recall, Jed Hotchkiss was General Lee's chief topographer during the Civil War. He and his staff were responsible for mapping out terrain and producing maps in the field. Quite a feat for an army on the move during a campaign.
There was an article on him with photos of some of his maps several years ago in the magazine America's Civil War.

IN CITY AND COALFIELD
------
New Virginian Branch

It comes from reliable authority that H. H. Rogers, owner of the Virginian railway, will start in a short time building a branch up New River to a connection with main line near Lurich. The branch has been surveyed from Matoaka down Big Bluestone and up New River. A survey had also been made from the mouth of Bluestone, down the New River by Hinton to Glade, the company owning these rights of ways.

[We have maps in the Archives by Jed Hotchkiss of Civil War surveyor fame showing how the N&W early on considered building down New River from the mouth of East River (now Glen Lyn, Va.) to the mouth of Bluestone and then up Bluestone to the Flat Top coal fields, but instead chose to go up along East River to Bluefield. Have any maps of these Virginian surveys turned up? Did the Virginian really own these rights of way?

Two Injured on Virginian

Near Mullens, on the Deepwater division of the Virginian, Friday night two engines came in collision. Both were badly damaged, and Engineer Starightiff had an ankle broken, and Fireman Wheeler had one of the legs smashed.
