Jim,
You are right about those being N&W branch lines off the Bluestone--Widemouth branch, but apparently the Virginian, for whatever reason, let it be known that it would complete for the coal off those branches.
Here is the previous posting on this proposal.

WILD BUILD INTO N. & W. TERRITORY
------
Virginian Files In Clerk's Office Maps and Profiles of Proposed New Route
------
FEEDERS WILL RUN UP FLIPPING AND CRANE CREEKS
------
Will Parallel Norfolk and Western Branches and be Built To Points Near Goodwill and Mora in Mercer Coal Territory
------
CONSTRUCTION WILL BEGIN SOON AND BE RUSHED
The Virginian Railway on yesterday filed in the county clerk's office at Princeton maps, profiles and the resolution of the board of directors authorizing and directing the construction of 5.85 miles of road up Flipping Creek to a point above Goodwill, and 6.32 miles up Crane Creek to Mora and Sagamore.
It is understood that contracts will be let as soon as practicable and that these new feeders will be speedily built.
This extension of the Virginian lines means opposition in the Mercer coal fields to the Norfolk and Western, as the new mileage parallels Norfolk and Western feeders.
------
[If these papers were filed with the clerk's office as reported these intentions of the Virginian must have been more than just the typical rumors that the newspaper often printed. The N&W Flipping and Crane Creek spurs were off the Bluestone Branch near its beginning. The nearest Virginian line would have been the main line near Rock, WV.]

Didn't see the May 28 article, but weren't those N&W branches? I know the one up Crane Creek to Sagamore was, and I'm pretty sure the Flipping Creek branch was. Jim Nichols

MANY BRANCH LINES OF RAILROADS PLANNED
  ------
Mileage in West Virginia Has Been Greatly Increased--Proposed Extensions

The progress of the construction of railways in this state is attracting great attention among all the railroad officials, and the mileage has been greatly increased this year over that of any previous two.
At Clarksburg the Fairmont & Clarksburg Traction Company will build an extension of the eight miles from Clarksburg to Salem.
At Gassaway the Elk & Little Kanawha railroad company will build a narrow gauge line from Gassaway on the mouth of the Otter to Rosedale, going down the Elk river.
[The next paragraph referring to Morgantown is blurred on the microfilm and is omitted here.]
In addition to the above the Virginian has filed maps and profiles for two branches, one six miles long up Flipping creek and the other seven miles up Crane creek to Mora and Sagamore.
  ------
[This is just a little follow-up article to the one posted here May 28 about these VGN branches.]
