NORFOLK AND WESTERN TO BUY SHORT LINE
------
Story That Columbus, Sandusky and Hocking Will be Taken Over is Revised

Columbus Dispatch: The story that the Norfolk and Western is to take over the Columbus, Sandusky & Hocking, a Pennsylvania property, has been revised again in railroad circles, coming this time from Norfolk and Western sources. It is stated that the Norfolk and Western will take over the short line on January 1, and this word seems to have gained general circulation among the various departments of the Norfolk and Western and is therefore given much credence. In fact, those repeating say positively that this time it is not a rumor, but that the authority comes direct from headquarters.
There is no doubt that the Norfolk and Western is anxiously seeking an outlet to the lakes, it being much dissatisfied with the present arrangement, whereby it must turn over at Columbus its enormous business to some other road. There is scarcely and doubt, either, that it has made efforts to induce the Pennsylvania to part with the Columbus, Sandusky and Hocking.
If it does so, however, it will establish a precedent as it is the policy of the Pennsylvania, or has been, not to give up possession of any road whose ownership it once acquires. The matter of the transfer would be arranged in the executive offices of either the Pennsylvania or Norfolk and Western, and no officer in Columbus, of either road, would necessarily know of the deal if it had been consummated, or was contemplated. The Columbus offices of the Pennsylvania have thus far received no word of it.

[It would be some 55 years later before the N&W would take over the Sandusky line.]
