FIREMEN MEET OFFICIALS BUT AGREEMENT IS NOT REACHED

The Norfolk and Western, represented by Vice President and General Manager N. D. Maher, met the committee from the O. R. T. yesterday at Roanoke and as a result of the conference the telegraphers received a substantial increase, the exact scope of which cannot be learned. It is understood, however, that, based on a sliding scale, the men will receive an increase equal to eight and four per cent.
Members of the O. R. T. who know about the result claim that all are well pleased and aver that the meeting between Mr. Maher and the committee was very friendly. The men are especially well pleased with the stand taken by Mr. Johnson, president of the road, as it is said that the friendly settlement was mainly brought about by his mediation.
It is understood that under the new agreement the telephone and telegraph men will be on the same basis, and as this was a much discussed point, the fact that an agreement was reached makes this result all the more satisfactory, as it will prevent any future differences arising between the men and the company. The members of the committee will close up a few minor matters today and will then leave Roanoke for their homes.
As far as can be learned neither side claims a victory, being satisfied that friendly terms have been agreed upon, and as this is what both sides were looking for, there is mutual satisfaction.
It is understood that the firemen met yesterday with the officials but as far as can be leaned no agreement has yet been reached. They will meet again today and it is possible that the matter will be closed this week.
