Kim,

Sounds as though your great grandfather must have been Alfred Hock, a man I once met when I was a child and he was an old man.

Gordon,

My great grandfather authored a couple of article's of his time on the Pocahontas as an engineer.

After the 991 arrived, he was the first engineer out of the Bluefield yard to put it through its paces.

He was then assigned to the 998, and had the dubious but unwanted distinction of rolling the first Mallet!

Both he and the fireman jumped. Nobody was hurt.

Kim,

Of course, 991 is correct, but I'm intrigued. Where did you find the engineer's account?

Where does the 991 fit in the scheme of the Mallet's? I read an engineer's account that the 991 was the first Mallet in Bluefield.
