In Narrows, they told the story of old Dr. Newton doing just that. As the story went, he asked how many patients in the waiting room were prepared to pay for their services that day. If so, they could go up the street to Dr. Carr. The rest would just have to wait until he got back from attending a man who had had a heart attack.          Jim Nichols    .

[It's interesting how often injured people were treated in their homes by a physician in those days.  It makes me wonder if the physician's scheduled patients were left sitting in the physician's waiting room while he was gone on an unexpected house call.  If so they had to be, well, patient patients.]
