M2c cylinders

Most of the Y class engines had them too, but they are less noticible, since
there is no "bulge." The bulge on the M2's results from the fact that it is a
retrofit, and they didn't all have it.    Jim Nichols

I think you are speaking of the "By Pass Valves". These were used when drifting
and are automatic in operation. they permit free circulation of air from one end
of the cylinder to the other.
