Locomotive ID

Jim -

The 2001 was one of 50 class Y-3 2-8-8-2s N&W got under the auspices of the USRA beginning in 1919. It would have had a big "US" on the tender, with "Norfolk and Western" on the coal bunker collar.
I don't know how many months or years the locomotives carried the "US" on the tender; someone else might be able to shed some light on it.

I'd like to see the photo, but will be out of touch until August 8th and hope that my inbox doesn't get overloaded in that time.

Hope this helps.

Subject: Locomotive ID

I have a photo of my grandfather standing in front of a steam locomotive. The location is said to be Bristol, VA/TN. I am trying to date the photo and identify the locomotive and hope that some one may be able to offer assistance. I believe, but can not confirm, he worked for the N&W. The locomotive carries the number 2001 and the only other discernable markings are the letters US on the coal/water tender. That leads me to think the photo was taken in the 1918-1920 time frame when the railroads were taken over by the government during WW I. I have seen other photos from this time period where the only markings were USA on the coal tender. In looking through the N&WHS photo archives for both the N&W and Virginian lines, the locomotive resembles a Class Y-2 but not exactly. Unfortunately I don’t know if the Y-2 existed in the 1918-1920 time frame. More than happy to send along the photo to anyone who might be able to identify it and confirm my general thoughts about the date.
