TRAINMEN WANT TO HANDLE THE BAGGAGE
------
Petition Company To Return To Old Baggage-Master Method
The trainmen on the Norfolk and Western have a petition up with the Norfolk and Western officials asking for the handling of the company baggage by members of the order.
The Southern Express Company, operating on the road, has the contract for handling all the baggage, on trains jointly with the express. On most of the runs, one man, the messenger, handles both at a less salary, than what it would cost the railroad to pay a regular train baggageman.
On the more important runs a helper is furnished the regular messenger, at a half or even less cost to both companies, than what a train baggageman would receive for a similar service.
The passenger department of the company say, it is learned, that they are well satisfied with the present arrangement, and it is more than certain that the trainmen will again fail to get back the baggage.
