Now on to the facts of the baseball side, at least according to what I have found, the Norfolk Tars were a New York Yankee farm team in 1944-1946, but they played in the Piedmont league.

As the Yankees made their way to New York for the
season, they'd usually have an exhibition game with
the Norfolk Tars. The Tars' stadium was hard by the
Lamberts Point Branch. A friend took some of us young
folks to see the exhibition game in 1946 -- Yogi Berra's
first year in the major leagues. Historic ? Maybe. But
for me the highlight of the game was seeing a Class J
drifting to Terminal Station to pick up No. 3.

Not sports-affiliated, but N&W did run four sections of
No. 3 circa 1955 -- U.S. Navy families being transferred
from Norfolk to San Diego. It IS in the Norfolk & Western
