This has all been great.

So for me the modeler, I guess I will be buying the Soundtraxx Tsunami sound decoder that was made using recordings of the 1218.

Bud is correct in noting that the boiler pressure will make a difference in
the whistle tone. We should also recognize that a boiler that is delivering
saturated steam (with water vapor-tiny liquid droplets) or superheated steam
(much hotter steam without any vapor in it what so ever) will deliver steam
at a different density (pounds per cubic foot) which will change the tone
also. So the class of locomotive and what it has for superheaters should
make a difference.

I have found only one mechanical drawing in the archives for the freight
"hooter" whistle which had been the passenger whistle until 1945. The
whistles were the same design on any class used, but the pitch was a little
different due to boiler pressure differences.
