According to pages 122-123 my copy of Kenneth Miller's book Norfolk
and Western Class J: The Finest Steam Passenger Locomotive, the
Roanoke Transportation Museum (now known as the Virginia Museum of
Transportation) opened in its original location on Memorial Day 1963
and remained there until October 1981, when towed to Birmingham,
Alabama for restoration. The L&N's restored Civil War era steam
locomotive and it's wooden combine from the Kentucky Railway Museum
were on hand and in steam on the Ronaoke Belt Line that day however.
The book does not seem to give the exact date that the 611 was museum
to Wasena Park, but probably at least several days before the museum
opened to the public.
