Crewe-Norfolk Engineer was A. C. "Buddy"
helps who was noted by David P. Morgan in a 1959 issue of Trains
agazine as "A Man In A Hurry". Would love to see film if available
or purchase.

Every operating district has one engineer (at least one) that
stands out for one reason or another. On the Norfolk Division's
East End, it was "Buddy" Phelps. He loved steam locomotives. There's
a practice known as "sharp-shooting" by the operating unions. It
involves keeping an eye on the call board, then manipulating your
availability so that you stand to be called for the assgnment you want.
So in the 50's as steam runs dwindled, "Buddy" would look to those
jobs with steam power. If necessary, he'd mark off, only to mark back
up just in time to catch a steam trip. "Sharp-shooting" is frowned on
by union and management, but it worked for "Buddy". Harry Bundy
