Thank you so much for the additional information, Jeff. I am told that they
have a special collection of some of his photographs at the Waynesboro, VA
public library.

Regarding your inquiry about Bill Warden, I did have the privilege of
knowing him, but not as a close friend. I was fortunate enough for Bill to
use several photos from my collection in some of his publications.

That said, Bill was a great photographer, who photographed much of the end
of steam, particularly in the Virginia's. Besides articles and photo
contributions to the rail magazines through the years, Bill also had
published at least a half dozen titles, that I can think of, mainly on the
N&W. These include one on N&W's Y Class 2-8-8-2's, one on N&W passenger
trains,1946-1971, one on N&W dieselization, one on N&W "A" & "J" class
locomotives, one on the BC&G RR in WV, and.another, I believe his last, on
West Virginia logging railroads.

Bill passed away in February 1994.

Just to satisfy everyone's curiosity I talk to Daniel last night to
inform him that he has

a Lima Locomotive Bell from a Shay. I had sent his pictures to several other
collectors

and to my surprise turned up three identity bells with the same pattern
number all from

Lima Shays there was a couple other tell tell signs that it came from a
Shay. One being

the flat bottom on the cradle the Shays had a separate peace that fit
between the cradle and the

boiler . One of the three bells is on display in the window at the Cass
Store in Cass WV

It still may be possible to identify the railroad and or locomotive from
which it came but

need more information. Is there any numbers stamp on the bronze part of the
bell? If

this were a Baldwin Loco bell there will be stamped a series of numbers on
the very top of the bell (bronze part)

I mean the part under the counter wait (Ball on top) you would have to
remove it to see the number. Its called

the Baldwin Code and can identify it down to the particular locomotive. 872
is just a pattern number

but may be compared to other known bells in other collections . Don't
assume that its C&O or Sou.

just because it was found in Charlottesville Va. these things get around I
found an N&W bell in Salt Lake

City UT.last year. You can tell that this is a very early bell possibly
before 1900 due to all the rings and

turnings on the outside or the bell. You may want to try this site for
further help http://www.railroadiana.org/

I have sent your photos to several other collector who might be able to
help.

Would it be possible, Gordon, to find the locomotive that the bell came
from?

The number 872 cast on the stand is almost certainly the pattern number for
that piece. It would be the same for all locomotives that use that
particular stand.

I have recently found some items that I would like to obtain some additional
information and/or advice as to where I might seek more information. First
I have located a bell from an unknown locomotive. I have attached three
photographs of the bell, number 872 on outside top. As I live near
Charlottesville and know that the original owner probably obtained the bell
here, could I assume that this is from either a Southern or C & O
locomotive?

The other find are several original photographs of steam locomotives and
trains signed by William E. Warden. The photos that I have are Southern and
C & O. I have been able to do some research online and have found some
information about him, but I wonder if there is anyone on the list who knew
him and is familiar with his books and photos?

I would greatly appreciate any help or comments from the list.
