NWHS members are invited to a program and field trip to study the 57 miles
long, 42" gauge South River Lumber Company logging railroad that met with
N&W's Shenandoah Division at Cornwall, Va., about eight miles north of
Buena Vista. Aubrey Wiley, an N&WHS member, will give the digital picture and
history program to the Blue Ridge (Lynchburg) Chapter NRHS at Charley's
Restaurant on Graves Mill Rd, Lynchburg on Wednesday, March 23. Dinner will
be at 6:00 pm with the program starting at 7:00 pm. There will not be any
business at this "Fun Meeting." Aubrey will lead a tour of remaining grade
locations in the high mountains of Amherst, Nelson and Rockbridge counties
on Saturday, March 26. The road trip rain date is April 9. The South River
Lumber Company's railroad had five Climax locomotives and during its
operating years of 1916 to 1938, it produced over 100 million board feet of
lumber, primarily chestnut.
