Gordon,

Back in the '70's I was with a couple of friends following the Virginian west to Mullens. We stopped around Covel and there saw some youngsters riding their trail bikes near the right-of-way. After tallking with them a few minutes, they ask where we were from. When we told them "Roanoke", one of them said in wonder  "gee, little Chicargo" (sic).

IN CITY AND COALFIELD
------
Big Crowd of Excursionists

About three hundred and fifty people left yesterday on the excursion to Roanoke.  Between ninety and one hundred were Bluefielders, the balance from the Clinch Valley and the coalfields.

[Roanoke must have been considered by these people to be a big city worth visiting.]
