The ICC Railroad Accident Investigation indicates that the collision occurred
in the 2nd curve east of the west passing siding switch. This curve passes
MP 350 and is east of the Cherry Street crossing.

Sometime after 1983 and before 1991, the Rural Retreat passing siding was
removed. That left a stretch of 28 miles between the passing siding at
Wytheville and the passing siding at Marion. With a traffic increase
resulting from initiation of double stack service, a passing siding was
added east of town. Harry Bundy
