Date nails

N&W used date nails from about mid 1921 through 1959. 1960 was made, but never used, the ones appearing on the market were found in kegs at the Roanoke Scrap Wharf and got out that way. I am told the 1959s only appeared in bridge ties, but that is hearsay. They were used throughout the railroad as far as I know.

The initial design was a nail with a square head and shank, then sometime about 1933 was changed over to a somewhat oval head and smaller shank, then about 1953(?) changed over to a round head, and round shank.
