IN CITY AND COALFIELD
------
Passenger Train's First
Yesterday morning a baggage car on train No. 9 ran for a half a mile with but one pair of wheels on the rails. The feat was performed by the passenger train between Claren and Roderfield, and outside of a few dents in several hundred railroad ties, and the expense of a few bolts no damage was done. It appears that some obstruction which was on the track struck against the brake shoes with enough force to throw the rear wheels of the front truck off the track. The accident occurred about nine o'clock. Outside of a scare the baggage man suffered no inconvenience.
[I wonder what the locomotive could have missed that would have derailed the baggage car. Also, against the brake shoes?]

Killed by Train
Charles Long, while trying to cross between the cars on a freight train at Northfork, lost his footing and falling between the cars, was run over. He died a few minutes afterward. The man was a miner and was employed at Maybeury. As far as can be learned no one witnessed the accident, but from the man's position on the track it is unlikely that the accident could have occurred in any other way.
