Jeff;
This signal protects a private road crossing. It has a "fail-safe"
feature -- as long as the
signals are lit, it means no train approaching. But if one or both of
the lights aren't
illuminated, it means a train is approaching or the signal system isn't
functioning. Grade
crossing protection for public highways is usually installed by the
railroad, but state
and/or local governments fund a majority of the cost. They probably
demand
a higher standard of protection. As previously discussed here, I
believe the private road
served a quarry in days gone by. Harry Bundy
