Thanks to all who replied. I was skeptical because I had never heard any discussion of this among old timers living here in the Ellett Valley.

Not correct, as I am sure a bunch of folks will resound. This is a famous wreck that occurred at Ingleside in May 25, 1927. Train No. 3 with pacific No. 212 collided with extra 103 east. The engine crew of No. 3 apparently missed train order No. 218, which read "Engine 103 run extra MX Tower to Roanoke and meet No. 3 Eng 212 at Ingleside. No. 3 take siding." Engineer Aldrich and Fireman O'Neil were both scalded to death by the steam.

Even with the location being fairly remote, a number of spectators came out, and according to a report in the Bluefield Daily Telegraph, photographers attempting to take photos for national publications were rebuffed by armed guards under the direction of Virginian officials, but the photographers occupied the officials and had members of the public shoot the photos for them.

While in the Ellett convenience store last evening, I saw a picture labeled "Wreck at New Ellett." A Virginian freight headed by box cab electrics and a steam engine (could not determine if pulling a freight or passenger train but passenger is more likely) had collided head on and the steam engine was resting on top of the first electric box cab at about a 45 degree angle. Many people were standing about but there was little evidence of "emergency" activity.

Does anyone know when this happened (could have been between about 1925 and 1955), why it happened, or anything else about it?
