N&W Stations and Sidings question

I recently purchased a 1964 N&W Stations and Sidings book (pocket size). I
was assuming that it would list the various locations by milepost. However
I was surprised to find that for example it shows Christiansburg as 285.03
"Miles from Norfolk". Christiansburg is at milepost 290 as the hot-box
detector located there announces it as 289.9. I realize that overtime the
railroad miles have grown or shrunk due to realignments, etc. A 2000 NS
Virginia Division track chart shows milepost 285 at basically the west end
of the Montgomery tunnels. Joe Shaw's milepost info shows these as well (
http://www.krunk.org/ns-nrv/d-cburg/signals.shtml).

My question is why does the Stations and Sidings not reference the track
mileposts?? What was the intended use of these books?
