I'm sure the railroad was aware of the culvert and factored that intotheir plans. Interesting how both NS and the Commonwealth appeared tohave pawned the expense of upgrading the culvert off onto theCity.

The $6.1 million to upgrade the culvert MAY be but a drop in the bucket when it comes to bringing
Amtrak service to Roanoke. The Commonwealth and NS have recently put up $250,000 for a
private consultant to simulate the effect the passenger train will have on freight traffic. Hmmm,
right now there's only one siding between Forest and MP N-239. Incidentally, Virginia's DRPT
is considering adding a second train Washington-Lynchburg.

Five days a week, Amtrak's train from Norfolk leave at 4:50 AM. This service started on Dec. 12, 2012.

Transit time Norfolk-Richmond is two hours 13 minutes. Exactly 71 year before, the N&W/ACL's
Cannonball made the trip in two hours twenty minutes. So 71 years and $117 mil later, Amtrak
has improved the transit time by seven minutes. Harry Bundy
