ACL E's on the N&W

As a sidelight on the ACL Es, when Paul Cabiness was Assistant Road Foreman on the Norfolk Division, lore has it that he wanted to find out where the overspeed trip went up on the ACLs.

He found out. 117 MPH.

Not black. They were purple and silver

I'm not sure you were old enough to appreciate
rock and roll music of the late 50s. The ACL's E units
were involved in a phenominal number of grade
crossing collisions and crews named them
for a popular song of the day -- Flying Purple
