You are correct, December 1964, page 44. I pulled up my Trains CD and
there it is.

It's been quite a while since I read the article. I was fascinated to see
who the engineer was, A.C. (Buddy) Phelps. Since my Phelps ancestors
mostly hail from tidewater North Carolina and Virginia, he may be a distant (or
even not-so-distant) cousin. My brother is the genealogy person in our
family, I'll ask him to check it out.

There was also a neat article in Trains titled "Man in a Hurry" sometime
in the 1960's on the run across the dismal swamp before the October 1959 run
to Williamson. Don't remember the year or issue but it gives a superb
account of that run at 90-100 mph as I remember, when D.P. Morgan was editor of
Trains.
