2156 and 2050 restoration

Its always been my opinion the best preservation is a full operational restoration.

I am on the SW side of Michigan am an IRM member, I work most weekdays, found most sundays off now, its like a 2-3 hour trip there/back.
You could count me in on anything 2050, cosmetic with a potential eye on full restoration.

This is the kind of engine that would run better on mainline excursions than the shorter IRM runs. If anything happens it should need stronger operational support if it can happen. The success of 765, 611, 1218, restoring 2050 would need to match that.

cheers

As a member of IRM who restores and runs steam, I can tell you that we do the best that we can with limited resources. Our main focus the last few years has been to get Frisco 1630 a Russian Decapod operational again. The good news is that it past it's 1472 day federal inspection in October, and we did a test run in November.

Concerning 2050 specifically, I would very much like to complete a cosmetic restoration eventually. All we need is people to do the work and money. It is inside a building to protect it from the elements unlike several other engines that sit outside. I welcome any members on the list who live near IRM to come out and volunteer.

I just did a Google Search on N&W 2050. I looked at the images. Is the entire locomotive rusted below the walkways? It looks like its in bad shape. Tell me again what it is they do at the IRM? Take care of the engines? NO.

Very disappointed.

Who paints the rods? Just about every locomotive on display that's not in operation. Every locomotive
at VMT has painted rods including the 611 only exception would be 1218 which they clear coated
and is now just rust for the most part. I saw 2156 last year looked OK by me.

Sometimes I think its not so good to put everything in the same game.
St Louis has been a good caretaker of the 2156 probably a lot better
than VMT would have done. Of course it would be nice two see all three
together. But if the ship sinks you lose it all

As a Virginia transplant to Illinois and N&W Historical Society member, I want to let you know I would hate for the Illinois Railway Museum to lose the 2050 and for the National Transportation Museum in St Louis to lose the 2156. There are N&W fans worldwide and we like having a small piece of its history in easy driving distance. That said, I do understand the desire to bring the girls home to Roanoke. And seeing them under steam would be glorious...since I have missed everything since then, steam wise.
Something neat happened at IRM--I was videotaping a kid about 5 years old running around being a nuisance...(to everyone but me)...he climbed on the nose of 2050 and was yanking the bell cord...I muttered to myself, That's N&W brass, boy, and you just go to town and let me record. His parents have no idea that they were the ones being a nuisance...they took him off the locomotive!
