>From the copies of newspaper articles I have on this accident, as well as what was written on it in the book "Steam's Camelot" by Jim Wrinn, all I used for a story I wrote about the accident, I can provide a few details. First, the 611 and the first part of the train passed through the affected switch with no trouble. Then, a car in the middle of the train picked the switch, which resulted in a few cars going on the ground. The 611 and the first part of the train proceeded to Suffolk with no issues. I was not aware that the 611 was inspected, though I expected it would be required as part of the investigation. As to my knowledge, the track was not affected until the above-mentioned car picked the switch. These are from the few details I have concerning the accident at this point.

Thanks for posting this, Jeff. I had the (obviously very mistaken) impression that there were only one or two cars on the ground - and by that I mean wheels, not the entire car. It's now much more obvious why NS has chosen to tread much more conservatively with the current steam program.

General question ; how was it that the locomotive and first couple of cars made it through the kink? Could their passage have worsened the kink or the track system in some way? Did 611 suffer any damage from negotiating the kink? Did she leave under her own power after inspection or was she towed?

Not trying to bring up a grim topic, however, I have never seen footage on this accident until now;
