Farmville line again

Thanks for the responses.  I know it's been said many times before by many
readers, but this group is an absolutely awesome source of information and I
very much appreciate having access to it.

Reader's Digest summary version - the original line through Farmville,
retained for passenger service and local freight, had much steeper grades
out of the Appomattox River valley.  The bypass was freight-only.

 

I'm sure others will provide much more detail, of course.
