Harry,

The Z-1 was rated at 5,000 tons with an M-2 pusher from Farmville to Crewe with a maximum 0.45 percent grade (that was before the new High Bridge was built in 1914 which reduced that grade slightly). Before the coming of the Z-1s, the M-2s were rated at 3,500 tons with an M-2 pusher.

  Bud:
Norfolk Div. Timetable #34 taking eff. Jan. 14, 1917
shows the eastbound tonnage rating for a Z-1 Phoebe
to Crewe via the Belt Line was 6000 tons (the ruling grade
on the Belt Line was 0.10%). The tonnage rating from
Farmville to Crewe was 3,750 tons. Harry Bundy
